We’re Still Here

Wow, it’s been a long time since anything was written here, hasn’t it? I’ve had a few people ask me what’s going on with SingPlaySurvive, so here it is, in short form:

  • I’m getting married in a few weeks. I got engaged soon after I created this site, and the timing wasn’t so great. There’s a lot to do to plan a wedding.
  • Unfortunately, that means the site took a back seat.
  • I have every intention of starting this up again soon. When I do, you can expect a new look, lots of video content, and some great new ideas to help you power through music school.

If you’d like to stay informed, you should find SingPlaySurvive on Facebook right now!

I can’t wait for the fall to arrive so I can get back to working on this site. For now, you can count on one new post each week.

Come back soon,

Jury week is coming. Good Luck!

It’s everyone’s favorite time of the semester: Juries are here! I don’t have much to say on the matter other than:

  1. Break a leg. I’m sure you’ll do great!
  2. Don’t let the formalities scare you. If you know your stuff, you’ll be fine.
  3. Remember: the professors who are hearing you are your friends. They want you to do well, and they’ve heard you before. They’ll understand if your Jury doesn’t go perfectly, especially if you’re a freshman.
  4. Upperclassmen… don’t push your luck ;)

Have a great week. Eat right, get plenty of sleep, don’t stress too much, and have fun from the moment you step into the room. Your passion and enthusiasm can soften even the grumpiest professors!

What I learned from an Exploding Pyrex Dish

I wish my story was as exciting as the headline sounds. I’ll keep it short: I was cooking, thinking about this blog, talking to my room mate, watching a video of a lecture, and planning all the things I was going to do with my free time tonight. I mindlessly opened the oven door and poured some water in the glass baking dish I was using to roast some squash. I shocked the dish, and it shattered into hundreds of pieces. It broke with enough force that we both thought the oven exploded.

Why am I sharing this? Because…

  1. The cleanup I had to do ate up most of the time I was going to spend working on this blog today, and so I couldn’t write the post that I PLANNED to write.
  2. It taught/reminded me of a few good life lessons

I said I’d keep it short, so here they are in bullets–no explanations, and no long paragraphs. Take them for what you will.

  • Multitasking isn’t always your best option
  • Slowing down and practicing mindfulness can be more “efficient” than hustling
  • Broken glass makes neat sounds. It also finds it’s way EVERYWHERE.
  • Obstacles happen. Let them fuel and inspire you.
  • Delays happen. Sometimes they suck, but sometimes they’re also a gift.
  • Don’t take life for granted (dramatic? maybe. honest reaction to the situation? yes!)

I’ll be back tomorrow with a real post, I promise… unless something else breaks in the kitchen.

New Home

Before I say anything else, I’d like to thank the 16 visitors (or the one person who visited 16 times) who have stopped by already. I don’t know who you are, but it means a lot that you came here.

It seems like just a few days ago, I set up this blog at wordpress.com. Well I decided tonight that I’d be better off with a “real” blog from the get-go, and now, a couple hours later, here I am, at singplaysurvive.com .

If you come back in the next couple of days, you’ll notice even more changes. First, I wrote a couple of articles today that I’m very excited to share. I’ll post them later this week. Second, I’m planning to tweak the look and feel of the site, so don’t be surprised if you come back and it looks different.

If you’re interested in staying updated, please send me an email to contact (atttt) bryanwegman (dot) com

Happy practicing.

Poll: What’s Your Biggest Frustration about Music School?

screaming womanOk, it might seem a little silly to take a poll, since I have had exactly three (yes three) visitors to this blog so far (thank you, whoever you are!).

I’m going to do it anyway, just in case one of them has thousands of friends, and so that I can start focusing my energy toward the questions that need answers the most.

So the question is… what is your biggest challenge when it comes to being a music student? If you could eliminate one source of frustration today, what would it be?

If you DO happen upon this poll, use the “share this” link to pass it on to friends. Better yet, invite them to the blog.

Attention All Music Students: A Blog for You

Hi Everyone, and welcome to Sing.Play.Survive–the only (as far as I know) blog dedicated to helping you make it through music school. If your music school experience is anything like mine was, you’re probably cramming your brain full of information, practicing your butt off, and having the time of your life. But, at the same time, you might feel overworked, under appreciated, and stretched to the point where you feel like you could break at any second.

Chances are, unless your friends and family have gone through music school themselves, they have NO IDEA how strenuous it can be. Even though you’re busy, and constantly surrounded by other brilliant, talented  people, it can still be a lonely, stressful way to spend four years of your life. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had someone cheering you on, offering advice, and sharing hints to help you work smarter, play harder, and get more out of your time as a student?
